520 | 3 | |b Abstract:This essay theorizes through the performance and video art of the artist Yozmit. Working through an idea of trans Asian futurity, it builds on queer of color critiques, trans studies, and feminist scholarship in order to think through a transnational approach to Asian and Asian American performance as cultural intervention. In this endeavor, the essay offers the concept of siliconicity to draw out the potential of Yozmit’s performances to enact and work toward a “trans Asian horizon.” Doing so provides an opportunity to read into cultural history as a mode of contextualizing the political stakes of siliconicity. As a critical and minoritarian concept, siliconicity animates silicone, which inscribes feminine and trans bodies, in order to provide alternatives to the normative and transnormative ideal body. Siliconicity enacts a queer trans worldmaking otherwise by attending to the complexities of cultural pressure in transnational East–West and East–East exchanges. The essay assembles a set of tactics for reading and performing beyond the political limitations of the here and now | |
